Germs! 😷

In science we have been learning about germs.

We learned the best way to get rid of germs was not to wipe it on your shirt or face, but to use soap and water.

More Germs

As we continued learning about germs this week, we had a doctor (and nurse!) visit us to teach us more about staying healthy.  I also brought out the GloGerms and a black-light to do an experiment.

When we read the hand sanitizer container it said it killed the germs.
However, if you want to get rid of the germs you should use soap and water.

Other first grade updates include:
Reading:  The children have been digging deeper into understanding how to retell a story and how to figure out tricky words.

Writing:  We took another close look at George McClements Night of the Veggie Monster.  We studied some of the different writing features we could use to make our small moments stories stronger.  We noticed he used ellipses, told every detail of a small moment, and used POP OUT words.  The children were rereading stories they thought they had finished and began adding in some of the same features that George McClements used in his writing.  It was so much fun watching the children help one another decide where and how to improve their stories.  Next week our focus in writing will be to publish a best piece that they have written so far.  I found the book read aloud on YouTube so everyone could see what the children have been studying.

PBIS assembly:  The school gathered in the gym to celebrate our great behavior throughout the school.  We reminded each other of our 4 Be's.  There were many "Big Ticket" prizes given out for positive behavior noticed in common areas of the school.  We were the proud recipients of the Big Library Ticket for great library behavior and having a high percentage of children returning their library books each week.  Great job, class!  I'm proud of you!

Social Studies:  We are going to begin a Social Studies unit about culture and celebration.  We will learn about a few different cultures from around the world.  Thank you to everyone who helped provide popcorn, chopsticks, a pinata, and other items to help us experience a couple different cultures.

Germs

As we begin to enter cold & flu season, I will be teaching a 1 week health unit about germs.  We even have a doctor coming in to visit with us and teach us even more about keeping the germs away and staying healthy.  Here is a video that was shared with the class today.

Germs

Now that the class seems to be nice and healthy, we are studying germs in order to prevent anything else from circulating around our classroom.  The class had quite an animated discussion about how to prevent germs from spreading.  We ended up deciding to test a few of our ideas with some Glo Germs and a black light.  Below you will find the document of our learning and many pictures of us trying to figure out if we got rid of the germs or not.
