#1. Visit the library: Have your child find books that are "Just Right" for his/her reading abilities and for books they would love to have you read to them. You might also participate in the following:
Summer Reading Program at the Grafton Library
#2. Combine activities with books: Will you be taking a vacation, going on a bike ride, catching fireflies, or cooking a recipe with your child? Why not also encourage your child to read a book about the activity? There are many books on these topics that will help your child deepen his/her knowledge about these activities. Going to a baseball game? Encourage your child to read about a favorite player. You will have lots to talk about on the car ride to the game, or over a hot dog while tailgating!
#3. Relax the rules for summer: The children did a great job all school year reading each night for their homework. Summer is a time to read for pleasure. Make sure there are plenty of reading materials around that interest your child, whether it be magazines, informational texts, or books by your child's favorite author. Read in a different location - on a swing, under a tree, or while snuggling in bed. However, I don't recommend reading while swimming!
