This week my class is starting a new Social Studies unit titled Long Ago & Today. Before we delve deep into American history, first we will study things a little closer to home.
We talked today about how first grade has changed over the years. Today your child is bringing home a little bit of homework they should work on WITH a grown-up. Their assignment is to talk to you about what life was like when you were a first grader. Time to take a trip back to Walkman's, TV's with no remote controls, and rotary phones.
The kids were taken aback when we talked about the things I didn't even have 6/7 years ago when your children were born:
*NO Smart Board
*NO iPads
*NO Soundfield System so they could hear me easier
*NO document camera
*NO digital camera
*NO blog
Just some chalk, erasers, & a blackboard for me! While we still use these things, our learning is so much more diverse now! The children couldn't quite wrap their head around it, but we had quite a lively discussion.
Please help your child complete their homework by the end of the week. These will be displayed in the classroom to help us understand how the world has changed in a few short years.
Maybe I'll even tell them what first grade was like for my mom. She went to a 1 room schoolhouse!
