Week 4

I can hardly believe that the children are starting their 4th week of school tomorrow!  We've gotten into our daily routine and things are certainly falling into place.

I was so happy to meet those of you who were able to attend our Back to School Night this past week.  The children were so excited to share their school with you.  

Here are some pictures from our learning last week:

We learned that readers think about what they are reading.  The next thing I knew the kids were all holding their little speech bubbles over their heads as they pondered each page they read!

This friend enjoyed a fun game of name lotto during our phonics practice.

A week ago we learned what the expected behaviors for reading with a buddy looked like.  Now we deepened our understanding by starting a chart about how to read with a friend.  Maybe you can try some of these ways at home, too!

We learned the rules for choosing "Just Right" books.  There's a great video we viewed HERE to learn how to go book shopping each week.

The boys and girls are looking forward to using the iPads this coming week for the very first time this school year.  We will begin with an app called "Teach Me First Grade." during read to self time.  One day a week, each child will get a turn on this app.  As the year progresses, we will be using the iPads for many more uses.

Social Studies:  This week, we will continue learning the meanings of the words culture and celebration.  The children will learn that America is a blend of many different cultures.  We have already started talking about some small customs that take place in our classroom and in our families.  For example, one custom we have at school is that the two first grades get together each day to listen to a story during snack time.  What are some customs you have as a family?  The class would love to hear about them!
